Error 104-unsupported wireless network device detected, system halted, remove device and restart
The next question is: How to fix it?
(The following procedure will help you to get a valid bios for Intel Presario R3000 not AMD Presario R3000)
A lot of post in forums, talk about this issue as a white list of manufacturers and devices that are able to work with Compaq Presario R3000 Series. (Also with other HP & Compaq models happens the same thing, but this page is only for R3000 Series). In fact it works as a white list, but this procedure is an issue related to FCC and Patents. But this problem only applies in USA, so it shouldn't be a problem in Europe, but it is. Due to manufacturing process there are no big differences if you buy a Compaq Presario R3000 in Europe or USA, in fact you can use the same internation support.
There are 3 different models
There are 3 different models of Presario R3000 series based on Video Card.
First one model, uses BIOS file with extension .uma which means Unified Memory Architecture. This model shares system memory for VGA memory card.
Second one uses BIOS file with extension identified as .m9x and, in this case VGA Card is based on ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 and 9200 Series with 64 Mb built-in and independent of system memory.
Last one uses BIOS file with extension identified as .m10, and owns ATI Mobility Raden 9600 Series
When you request us the customized BIOS firmware, you'll receive an email with 3 links. Get your right file an rename it into bios.wph and put it in the Winphlash folder. Run Winphlash.
So, what to do to plug any MiniPCI Wireless Card?
First you've got in mind is where is the MiniPCI slot located, but we guess if you arrive here you know it very well, because if you've got this problem, it is because you've plugged a miniPCI wireless card.

Anyway we'll say miniPCI socket is located behind the keyboard, and not in the back of the laptop, as other pieces like, memory slot, or hard drive. Even behind the keyboard there is one more memory slot.
So, following the procedure STEP by STEP.
Next of your questions will be, how can I follow any procedure with the miniPCI, if I'm not able at least to boot up on POST (Bios Startup)?
The answer is easy, because we'll plug miniPCI wireless card after POST. So, remove your miniPCI Wireless Card, and keep the keyboard unmounted to have easy access to miniPCI slot and restart your computer as usual. Once your Operating System has finished to load, force computer to suspend, closing the screen. Be sure, for example in Windows, in Energy Configuration, the operation related to close your screen is suspend mode.
After some seconds, your computer is in stand by mode. Open the screen. Now plug miniPCI Wireless Card, and be careful not touch any key or mousepad. Once card plugged, touch any key to power on latop again. Now do right click on My PC icon and select Properties, and click in Device Manager. Right click on any device from the list and select Search for New Hardware changes. Your miniPCI wireless card will be detected. Set it up as the manufacturer says using their own drivers or windows drivers. When procedure is finished, and windows says your hardware is ready to work back to Device Manager, look for the new item in networking devices and right click to select Properties on it. In the new window, in the top of it look for Detail page, and click on it. Ok now we're looking for the most important information we need to generate your own customized BIOS for your device. This information is Vendor ID, Device ID and Subsystem.

As you see in the image you have to identify next data.
VEN_104C, it means Vendor ID: 104C
DEV_9066, it means Device ID: 9066
SUBSYS_003317CF, it means Subsystem: 003317CF
Ok take care we need 4 characters for Vendor ID, 4 characters for Device ID, and 8 characters for Subsystem. Now download this package which contains the tools to flash your BIOS. This Package doesn't contains the ROM file, because we'll generate one specified for you based on your miniPCI network adapter and based in the F.45 version of Compaq Presario R3000 series which is the latest version currently.
Extract the contents of the zip file in a folder. Now the only you need is your own customized ROM file. Go to the top of this page and put the Vendor ID, Device ID and Subsystem in the form, and click Enter, you will be redirected to the payment system. Just paid you will receive an email with several file links. Download it/them and rename it/them to: 089cf45w.uma, 0898f45w.m9x, 0898f45w.m10

Ok That's all. Now run winphlash.exe and wait for reprogramming finish.

¿What happens if something goes wrong when writing BIOS firmware and latop can not boot up?
We hope you don't have problems writing the BIOS firmware file on your laptop but if for any reason something goes wrong there is a rescue procedure we'll explain now.
In order to recover our laptop to its original state we have to own a Rescue Diskette valid for our laptop
As we explained before there are three models around R3000 Presario Series based on VGA model. Again here we have to choose the right one for us or in the worst of cases try with all of them, because only one will work. Don't worry because the rescue procedure that we can use resides on ROM, so is not eraseble. Due to that we can use this procedure even with the BIOS system crashed. So, choose the right disk for you. It is a self extracting image diskette.:
  • Version VGA UMA (Unified Memory Architecture) with Shared Memory
  • Version VGA ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 and 9200 Series 64 Mb RAM
  • Version VGA ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Series

  • Now follow next steps to recover your laptop:
  • Remove the battery from your notebook
  • Connect an USB floppy disk drive
  • Keep pressed both keys Windows + B keys simultaneously, and then connect AC/DC power and turn on your notebook while you keep on pressing the keys.
  • We won't be able to see anything on the screen
  • But, USB floppy disk drive led will begin to lit. That will be our indicator. While light is on the procedure is working. You can release the keys
  • Let the procedure ends. When USB floppy disk drive light turns off, which takes 2-10 minutes more or less the procedure has finished
  • Computer should do auto reboot when finished, so wait.
